SpartanUK  has a proud heritage in steel manufacture and the site in Gateshead has undertaken some form of steel plate rolling since the early years of the last century. The company was known as Spartan-Redheugh, part of the Firth Group, until the millennium, when it was acquired by Gruppo Malacalza of Italy and renamed Spartan UK.

Using the “short lead time, customer service focused” business model pioneered by Trametal in Italy, Spartan UK has adapted and improved the strategy to suit its specific markets and consequently has enjoyed an enviable record of growth in sales.

In recognition of the company’s success Spartan won The Journal “Fastest 50 large company” award for 2007.  A year later steel plate sales reached a record of 160,000 tonnes.

Significant capital investment has been made with constant upgrading of equipment and facilities. Most notable in recent years are two state of the art batch furnaces and new motors to drive the Quarto Mill.

In February 2008, Malacalza sold Spartan UK & Trametal Spa to Metinvest, the vertically integrated mining & metals group from Ukraine. As part of a World Class global group and with a modern, highly efficient mill, Spartan UK can look to the future with confidence.
